First you will need to take a comfortable measurement of your dog’s neck where the collar will lie, then add 4” (10cm) for the buckle which will give the length you need to order for a comfortable fit and which will also give some adjustment either way.

Most pups will have done the bulk of their growing by around 9 or 10 months old so that may be a good time to buy their ‘adult’ dog collar. It’s not a precise science but this usually works out right! Traditionally the leather trade still work in imperial measurements, so please order in inches. Suitable Quality Custom Dog Collars 

First steps to finding the right size dog collar is to consider your dog’s breed, but this should only be a guideline as each dog is different and there are variations in size. To make sure your custom made collar is going to be the right fit, you need to measure using a fabric tape measure. To make sure it is not too tight, you should be able to fit two fingers under it. Which width? In general wider collars will provide more support and will be better for stronger dogs. A wider collar will also be more comfortable as it will reduce pressure on the neck. Another factor to consider is your dog’s fur thickness. If it gets regular haircuts, you should measure before and after going to the groomers to make sure you get an adjustable collar that will suit your dog at all times.

A good guide for a leather dog collar width would be:

• ½” for small dogs or puppies
• 5/8” for small to medium size e.g. up to a small Spaniel size
• ¾” – 1” medium to large breeds e.g. Springer size
• 1 1/4” – larger breeds e.g. Labrador and stronger dogs.
